Managing the unexpected: a new intelligence for environmental services
Optimising on-demand planning to keep cities clean and operations efficient.
The challenge
Contarina is a public utility managing waste and environmental services for the 49 municipalities in the province of Treviso, an area with one of the highest recycling rates in Europe.
Contarina’s strategic challenge was to optimise the management of on-demand environmental services.
Operations such as bulky waste collection and bin replacement are inherently complex and hard to plan in advance. Yet these activities are essential for keeping cities clean and residents satisfied.
How we create value
To turn unpredictability into efficiency, Optit designed an advanced analytical solution built around two phases.
The first is Capacity Planning: a forecasting module calculates weekly staff and vehicle requirements, anticipating fluctuations in demand driven by seasonality or local events. This allows resources to be allocated in advance while keeping the flexibility needed to respond to change.
The second is Daily Planning: mathematical models and algorithms optimise daily orders, defining routes, assigning vehicles and sequencing activities.
The logic engine is built into a web application connected in real time to Contarina’s IT infrastructure. Combining predictive algorithms with operational intelligence has brought Industry 4.0 principles to life in the public sector.
Impact
The project delivered direct, tangible and measurable benefits:
- Dynamic adaptation to fluctuations in demand, ensuring maximum responsiveness even in unforeseen scenarios.
- Greater operational efficiency, thanks to bespoke mathematical models tailored to each type of service.
- An optimal, timely balance between logistics costs and service levels, even in critical situations.
- A lower overall environmental impact.
- Better quality of service for residents, thanks to a model that can be replicated elsewhere.
