The challenge

Food distribution for large retail chains and manufacturing involves extreme logistical complexity, shaped by the rigid constraints of the cold chain.

For Brivio & Viganò, running a network whose vehicles cover around 45 million kilometres a year means solving daily operational challenges with an extremely high density of constraints: multi-temperature loads with movable bulkheads that require maximising fill rate and calculating the minimum number of pallets per compartment, absolute incompatibilities between product categories (fish products, for instance, cannot be loaded alongside other categories in the same compartment), and strict delivery time windows.

On top of this, there’s the need to factor in return trips for collecting empties, returns and backhauling, and to schedule the actual deployment of resources (tractors, trailers and drivers) in line with driving and rest time regulations.

The company’s goal was to overcome the fragmentation of its processes — sequential and as-is — unifying route planning and fleet deployment within a single, integrated digital ecosystem.

How we create value

Optit met the challenge by tailoring its OptiLogistics platform to the client’s specific processes, implementing an architecture split into four interconnected functional modules:

  • the Tactical module models recurring service calendars, generating weekly templates and route skeletons;
  • the Planning module processes operational order flows, calculating the optimal, lowest-cost routes;
  • the Dispatching module (deployment) automates the actual allocation of resources, combining mathematical optimisation models with machine learning algorithms to match drivers with the routes and goods they know best;
  • finally, the Analytics module stores operational data over time, comparing actual performance against theoretical targets.

The entire ecosystem is natively integrated via web services with Brivio & Viganò’s existing systems: the transport management system (TMS), internal systems and satellite telematics equipment for real-time GPS tracking.
