{"id":47364,"date":"2026-07-07T17:41:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-07T15:41:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/optit.net\/insights\/data-models-and-people-artificial-intelligence-serving-real-world-decisions\/"},"modified":"2026-08-11T18:42:53","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T16:42:53","slug":"data-models-and-people-artificial-intelligence-serving-real-world-decisions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/optit.net\/en\/news\/data-models-and-people-artificial-intelligence-serving-real-world-decisions\/","title":{"rendered":"Data, models and people: Artificial Intelligence serving real-world decisions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The right question is not \u201cAI or people\u201d<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAI or people?\u201d may (perhaps) be a good title, but it certainly does not reflect current developments in <\/span><strong>human-machine interaction<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, nor does it do justice to the potential of this exchange.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decisionsciencesummit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decision Science Summit 2026<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Madrid \u2014 organised by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decisionsciencealliance.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decision Science Alliance <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and hosted by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upm.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universidad Polit\u00e9cnica de Madrid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 two days of discussions highlighted a clear principle: excellence in Decision Intelligence is not about machines deciding for people. The most impactful results occur when machines calculate scenarios, forecasts, and alternatives at speeds no human analyst could match, presenting them as actionable options for human intelligence.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final choice remains with the individual, who possesses crucial qualities that machines lack critical thinking, an understanding of socio-relational constraints, and deep knowledge of subtle contextual dynamics.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond the high-level presentations, the most valuable aspect of the Summit was its community. Researchers, professionals, and startups from logistics, energy, healthcare, manufacturing, and finance gathered with a shared goal: finding faster, more sustainable, and impactful ways to turn data and models into trusted, actionable decisions.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For us at Optit, participating in these industry discussions is essential. It allows us to gain new perspectives, share lessons learned from over 15 years in the field, and help <\/span><strong>shape the future of this ecosystem<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Optit\u2019s contribution: three sessions, one core message<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Optit was represented at the Decision Science Summit by CEO Matteo Pozzi, who took part in three distinct sessions with different formats and objectives.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the presentation <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><\/i><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond Efficiency: Decision Intelligence for Triple Bottom Line Resilience<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he outlined Optit\u2019s energy optimisation work at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.milanomalpensa-airport.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milan Malpensa Airport<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Operating margins increased by 21%, full return on investment was achieved in under three months, and planning time was reduced by 90% thanks to a human-in-the-loop approach. This proves that a Decision Support System (DSS) <\/span><strong>combining<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> data-driven, model-based, and AI methods can multiply economic, environmental, and social impacts simultaneously.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the session <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><\/i><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Tools to Control: What Are AI Vendors Really Delivering?<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 chaired by David L\u00f3pez (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esade.edu\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Esade<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) alongside the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/armada.defensa.gob.es\/ArmadaPortal\/page\/Portal\/ArmadaEspannola\/iniciohome\/prefLang-en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spanish Navy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.exentriq.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exentriq<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/baobabsoluciones.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">baobab AI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 the main takeaway was clear: organisations <\/span><strong>do not buy AI<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to replace people. They <\/span><strong>adopt<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it to combine computational power with human judgment, maintaining control and governance over complex processes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EURO Working Group on the Practice of OR operates within <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euro-online.org\/web\/pages\/95\/euro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EURO <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(the Association of European Operational Research Societies) to bridge academic research and real-world business challenges. As a co-founder of the group, Matteo Pozzi co-chaired a joint session with the EURO Practitioners&#8217; Forum and the Decision Science Alliance. This meeting marked a significant step towards building permanent <\/span><strong>collaboration channels<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between research and industry, ensuring quantitative models move beyond academic conferences to where real-world decisions are made.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The value of AI is not in technology.
