The ENABLE DHC consortium met in Rijeka, Croatia, for their regular project meeting, two days full of ideas and valuable insights. The project, funded by the LIFE Programme, aims to make district heating and cooling networks more efficient and sustainable.
ENABLE DHC develops 9 investment plan case studies in 7 countries (AT, HR, IE, IT, LV, SI, UA) with very different framework conditions. Furthermore, the impact of the activities will be enhanced through concrete support to 18 follower case studies in the project countries, encouraging the replication of these solutions beyond the consortium’s borders.
During the meeting, in addition to strategic sessions and planning the next steps of the project, the consortium had the opportunity to visit Rijeka’s district heating system. One of the most significant moments of the visit was the tour of two cogeneration plants located in residential areas, which showcased not only high-efficiency standards but also a highly effective integration with the surrounding territory – one of the plants is even integrated into the ground floor of an apartment building.
🔝 Special mention goes to the aesthetics of the facilities, which have become a visual attraction rather than merely “a necessary but unappealing” infrastructure.
As the leader of Work Package 3 (WP3), Optit will develop investment plans for each project case study by integrating low-temperature renewable energy sources such as geothermal, solar thermal, and waste heat recovery.
